Default Dom/Ill Mesmer build

Now I checked out Celestial Beavers guide and I saw somethings I liked but I want to find something more specific. So what is a good Domination/Illusion mesmer build without using anything else but mesmer skills?

If you're looking for a build with points only in Domination, Illusion, and Fast Casting with no other profession's skills, then you're looking for a bad build. Inspiration is pretty much a necessity in any straight Mesmer build for energy management.

You should really decide on your main line to be Domination or Illusion, then add in Inspiration and Fast Casting with maybe a minimal investment in the other line. If you're really looking to use Domination and Illusion, one example would be a very small investment into Illusion for [[Frustration] to help with Domination interrupts.

Edit: btw I'm at Purdue and my brother was a Sycamore. Indiana's GW players unite!

I disagree.

I see no problem, in PvE, using Domination, Illusion and Inspiration and leaving out Fast Casting almost entirely. Unless you really want to use those 3-second cast spells you're not going to lose out on much. The benefits of an Illusion + Domination build can be seen when combining [[Frustration], [[Arcane Conundrum] and Domination Interrupts. Inspiration never needs too much investment to make Power Drain pretty cool energy management anyway.

I'd consider something like this for starters. It's just something I've conjured on the spot, I'm sure many improvements and tweaks could be made.

[build prof=Me name="Domination+Illusion" box Dom=11+1+1 Illu=10+1 Inspiration=8+1 Fast=6+1][Arcane Conundrum][Frustration][Cry of Frustration][Power Spike][Power Drain][Drain Enchantment][No Skill][Clumsiness][/build]

I'd consider using whatever elite best suits the area. [[Ineptitude] for physical-heavy areas, [[Power Block] is a possibility for further caster shutdown, [[Visions of Regret] would be a good choice also. If you need to take a Resurrection skill I'd swap out Drain Enchantment, and to make better use of Arcane Conundrum and Frustration I'd pair myself up with an interrupt Ranger, or another Mesmer perhaps. It's even possible to have a decent spread of attributes in 4 lines of magic. You could get Domination higher by re-distributing some but it's only a few extra points of damage at the end of the day.

An alternative to Arcane Conundrum could be to team with a BHA+[[Epidemic] ranger and use something such as [[Empathy] yourself instead.

Just my preliminary thoughts.

For some reason, Power Drain is getting classified as an energy management skill by many people nowadays. Am I the only one that still views it as a spell interrupt with energy bonus on the side?

I remember targeting monks and dangerous casters first then attacking the warriors. Unfortunately, I ran out of energy while attacking the warriors, Power Drain as an energy management skill becomes quite useless then.

I prefer a real energy management skill that would grant me the energy when I need it. I dont think I am being overly demanding.

Yes, thats what I use with my AP build.

PDrain is more of a spell interrupt than an e-management skill.

Going without fast casting is only viable in PvE. But especially in PvE, interrupts aren't that strong. It's much more effective to simply kill the enemy instead of interrupting him.
So I'd also say that an Illusion + Domination build is most probably bad. At least I haven't seen one that would make any sense (meaning: either good in PvP or effective in PvE HM) yet ...

I assume this is because the idea that unless you're running the "best build", which at the present time is probably some concoction involving Cry of Pain and Assassin's Promise, any other build is "bad" in comparison. Considering any other build should be scorned, naturally.

Whilst I agree in principle with your comment on Interrupts not being effective in PvE, there are 2 good enough reasons for using them:
1. Sport.
2. Practice.

now that I take a deeper look into the illusion skills I might make my domination and Inspiration as my two big skills and Fast Casting on the side.

From the OP's wording I misinterpreted the desire for including Inspiration at all. My bad.

The attributes and skills on the quoted build look very workable. I still think my initial point stands of needing Inspiration in any straight Mesmer build, but if you're looking for running Domination and Illusion together, that looks like a great place to start.

Apart from PvE skills, the best skill for a mesmer from EotN would be [[Wandering Eye], which is basically like Clumsiness with only one big AoE trigger instead of multiple single target triggers. If you plan on running only mesmer skills, and especially if you're going to drop Illusion, then missing out on EotN won't be affecting your build much.

Okay that is good to know. I think Im going to focus more on Domination and use a lot of damage spells. The inspiration will help as a way to gain health and energy.

Domination's direct damage skills suck , but the conditional damage skills (empathy ,backfire ,etc.) are pretty sweet.
